Yak from Atelier Zitron

Composition: 70% pure new wool, 30% yak (16 micron) from Tasmania | worsted
needle thickness: 3.0 mm - 5.00 mm
Running length: 100g approx. 500m
Consumption for a ladies' long-sleeved sweater in size 38 plain right knitted: approx. 3 skeins of yak.

If you ask for yak wool on the internet and in local wool shops, which are so important for the wool industry, they will certainly show you one or the other yarn made of yak. However, due to the short fibre length, this is not a carded yarn but only a common carded yarn (= shorter parallel fibres than long-fibre, random-fibre carded yarn). Because the beautiful wool and the wonderful warming qualities of the proud yak cow are very popular and have been in fashion for some time.

The subtle difference in wool qualities is only revealed to the inexperienced and often inexperienced knitter at a late stage. When buying wool, you might want to look at the composition and decide whether it is organic wool or 100% natural wool. But the origin of the wool and by that I mean geographical and climatic data, the treatment (e.g. mulesing), the genetics and the nutrition of the animals is rarely or not reported and often for a good reason because a look behind the scenes would show that often more than half of the so often offered yarns and varieties in different colours and names come from the same manufacturer. On the market, these yarns are then offered at different prices and respect often also as different qualities.

The manufacturers seldom or not at all explain the dyeing methods and if you ask the representatives of these companies about it, they will turn away and not deal with it, mainly for two reasons. Firstly, the representatives know almost nothing about it, because they want to sell first of all and secondly, it is not in the interest of the companies to publish data about the harmful substances in the dyeing and to inform their representatives accordingly.

Atelier Zitron's Yak, which is sold exclusively and exclusively by a small hand of dealers worldwide, comes from Yaks and Merino sheep wool from Tasmania, a small island south of Australia. This yak represents the highest quality available and is characterised by its unsurpassed long fibre length (woollen yarn quality) and fabulous 16 micron fibre thickness. These two properties make the wool extremely soft and cuddly and because of the fibre length and tangled fibre layer, it is durable, robust, warming and low linting. Since there is no heavy industry with air polluting pollutants in Tasmania, the animals and their wool garments are completely free of them.

The merino sheep on Tasmania are a very special species, because there has never been any breeding that wrinkles the skin of the animals in order to gain more surface area for wool and thus a higher yield. Therefore there is no mulesing because the painful removal of the skin around the tail to prevent the infestation of fly maggots is not necessary because the animals are not disease-bred and their skin does not wrinkle in which the fly maggots would feel comfortable.

All dyes of Atelier Zitron are Ökotex Standard 100 certified dyes which not only fulfil the Ökotex and legally required limit values, but even undercut them for many harmful substances to such an extent that they are below the detection limit! Did you know that many people with an "allergy to wool" do not have an allergy to wool at all but react to the harmful substances during dyeing? We have already seen some such allergy sufferers who now wear Atelier Zitron wool without any complaints and enjoy good health!

If this yarn could be bought in the big fashion chains as e.g. a finished sweater, it would cost far more than 500€, would not be an individual item and might have been produced in dubious conditions (keyword: fair trade & working conditions)
This example shows well what is important when knitting yourself: On the one hand you have a unique design which also fits perfectly and on the other hand you decide yourself which materials to use.

Knitting means self-determination and freedom for people with vision and an ecological conscience.
